Founded y Leo Porter in 1981
Buffalo Canyon Retreat came about in 1981 due to the request of one of Leo Porter's insurance clients. The client, along with several of his brothers, had second homes at Lake McConaughy. It had become very dangerous around the lake at the times of major holidays. A person sleeping in his tent was run over by a drunk driver, just to mention one of many occurrences. Leo's client wished they had a safe place to take their families with no alcohol or drugs allowed. Leo told him, "I have a perfect place for that, where we can hike in the wilderness area, and see a historical site called "Devil's Wash Basin." It would be a great family campground, and is by a country road with easy access."
For the 33 years since that first camp, the camp has been free to everyone, including all meals and entertainment. There has also been a number of weddings and other celebrations held at the grounds down through the years. No fee for anything! Just free will donations. We are thankful for God’s provision, and those He has touched in helping keep this camp open.
